2010 Price List
Updates to an existing site:
$48/hour, billable on the quarter hour. Resizing an image for a new release and uploading it with a blurb should take no more than 15 minutes. That's $12. How much have you been paying elsewhere?? No updates for a month or more?--no charge! Other updates and redesigns--we'll talk. I work fast, so fees stay low. New clients: add 15 minute, one-time fee for account set-up. This entails my downloading your site to my computer in a secure account, and covers bandwidth as well as time.
New domain registration:
Online registration fee plus $20. Online reg fees are up to $15, so this would be $35 or less to you. You can save money by registering it yourself; I'll tell you where.
If I do this for you, I will give you a copy of the registration location, user name, and password so you will never be tied to one host. Why? you ask. Because many authors have found themselves "stuck" with an online community because they registered through them and can't get the passwords. And there was that time when I was new at the game and my web host just completely shut down overnight.
Pointing a domain to a new host
If you have all the passwords I need, $20. Questions: free.
Uploading an existing site to a new host: (moving your site)
I hate to say anything depends on size, but this one does, as it uses bandwidth. A simple site is $50. A larger one will be $100. I can look at yours and tell you up front.
New web site:
Developing a new basic site and uploading it to a DNS (your new host), $100 per hour. Soon-to-be-published writers will be happy to know that a very simple, basic site can be done in one hour. Something along the lines of a page with or without a background, a heading, your photo, a blurb about the book, an image of the book, a short note from you, information about when it will be released, that kind of thing. Please note I am not a graphic artist, but I know where to get headers, backgrounds, and images, and how to put them to good use. And if you want a great photo of yourself on your site, you'll need to send a quality digital photo.
Domain registration and pointing (see above) are not included in the price for a new web site, as many people can handle that on their own and save money.
I am working on a portfolio of websites designed from original artwork. If you are in the market for a new design, or just want to purchase one ready to go, please contact me.
Newsletter:
Let me say right up front, I don't write newsletters. For anyone. That said, if you write it, I will upload it to a newsletter service, test it, send you a test to proof (if desired), and schedule it to go out when you want it to go out. 1/2 hour charge is standard, more if unusual. There is also a per-address charge from the newsletter service, but it is very inexpensive.
If you don't have a newsletter service, I can set it up for you. 1/4 hour. Additional charges for uploading your mailing list, depending on whether it's in .csv format or if that needs to be done by me, and whether you want each email personalized with the recipient's first name--always a nice touch. You must have everyone's consent to be on that mailing list or the service will ban you when it gets complaints. Questions: free.
Form:
Stop spam! A new form on your site can cover everything from simple email to ordering books to fan mail. This is a "recaptcha" form, which asks your visitor to look at a jumbled graphic and enter two simple words. See my form below as an example. $48 if you are hosted by a company I'm familiar with.
Blog:
I have a blog here that will guide you through setting up your own, or I can do it for you. Regular fee applies.
Something else not on this list:
Perhaps I haven't included the one web service you'd like to have taken care of. Questions: free.
Details you'll want to know:
First-time clients pay a 50% deposit, balance due on completion. Paypal's the quickest, though I will take a check if you want to sit around and wait for it to clear. Repeat clients pay for work done.
